Neuropsychological Evaluation Process

Evaluations are typically a full-day process including:

  • An interview to gather relevant information from both the patient as well as a collateral informant when indicated, such as a parent, teacher, and/or significant other.

  • Face-to-face testing lasting three to six or more hours. Testing time depends on many factors, including the reason for the evaluation, age, among other factors

  • Feedback to review the test results, impressions, and recommendations once complete.

Additional time spent "behind the scenes" includes but is not limited to records review, scoring, interpretation, and report writing

Ages
  • Children and Teens (6-17)

  • Adults (18-64)

  • Older Adults (65+)

Why seek an evaluation?

Neuropsychological evaluations may be required and/or requested for many reasons. While not an exhaustive list, some reasons include:

  • Cognitive changes in aging  raising the concern for dementia.

  • Stroke

  • Seizure disorder/epilepsy

  • TBI/Concussion

  • Brain tumor or other cancer

  • Pre- and/or post-surgical evaluations, including transplant

  • Issues affecting school, including learning disorders and ADHD

  • Unknown reasons for cognitive difficulties or changes

Dementia

When there are concerns regarding cognitive decline in aging, a neuropsychological evaluation will help determine the presence of cognitive decline as well as clarify the nature of cognitive strengths and weaknesses. Such clarification can help inform diagnostic considerations (mild cognitive impairment, Alzheimer's disease, vascular dementia, Lewy Body dementia. etc.), which helps your physician determine most appropriate treatment options. Resources and recommendations for the patient as well as their loved ones is an important and valuable part of a dementia evaluation.

Psychoeducational

Psychoeducational evaluations include a comprehensive assessment of an individual's academic, cognitive, and emotional functioning in order to determine strengths and weaknesses. This understanding will help determine if the individual meets diagnostic criteria for learning disorder(s), ADHD, giftedness, or other condition impacting academic performance. Academic accommodations will also be suggested as appropriate based on these results.

Some of the most common reasons for a neuropsychological evaluation are exaplained in more detail below.

General Neuropsychological Concerns

General neuropsychological evaluations may be required and/or requested for any number of reasons, including for concerns related to difficulties with attention and concentration, memory, planning, language, etc.  Such evaluations are often conducted with individuals whose medical history include a condition(s) which may negatively impact neurocognitive functioning (e.g., epilepsy, a history of stroke, a history of a brain injury or concussion, etc.).

Such evaluations are also helpful when a patient is experiencing neurocognitive difficulties for an unknown reason.
